Matthew J. Eisenberg

Matthew J. Eisenberg

Matt Eisenberg is a Director at DP&F and focuses his practice on business and real property transactions and advice. Matt was born and raised near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and received his bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from Columbia University in New York City.

Matt first began to work in the wine industry in 1992 when he obtained his Wine Captain's Certificate from the Sommelier Society of America. He then became cellar master and later the sommelier and wine buyer for the "21" Club, the famed New York City prohibition-era restaurant and former speakeasy.

In 1996, Matt received his J.D. from Temple University School of Law, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he served on the Temple Law Review and received the Law Review's outstanding writer award. Before joining DP&F, Matt practiced transactional law and commercial litigation in a large, Philadelphia-based firm.

In 1998, Matt moved to Napa to pursue representation of the wine and hospitality industry and its related businesses. At DP&F, Matt has successfully negotiated sales and acquisitions of vineyard/winery/brewery/resort/restaurant property and related assets, a range of debt and equity financing transactions, complex vineyard leases and grape contracts, in addition to preparing and structuring investment offering materials and advising clients on a variety of real property, alcohol beverage and business planning issues, including business entity formations, 1031 exchanges and real property sales tax issues/appeals. Matt represents a range of clients, from public companies to family-owned business, in addition to international clients in brokerage, distribution and general business matters. Matt also publishes and speaks regularly in his field and is on the Planning Committee for the Wine Industry Financial Symposium.

Outside the office, Matt is active in the Napa community. Between the Fall of 2000 and the Spring of 2002, Matt was the general coordinator for the Playground Fantástico project, a community-built playground and public art space that brought 3,000 people together for a barn-raising style "build" in May of 2002. Matt currently serves as Chair of Friends of Playground Fantástico. Matt also serves on the Board of the Napa Valley Youth Symphony, where he is co-chair of the fundraising committee, and is President of the Charter Council of Napa Valley Language Academy, a dual-immersion public charter school.

Much of Matt’s time outside the office is spent with his wife Hillary Homzie, a children's writer (www.homzie.com), and their three young boys. Matt’s interests include travel, piano and keeping up as the coach of his 8-year old son's soccer team.
