Scott Thomas named 2010 "Attorney of the Year" by the Napa Legal Secretaries Association, has focused on estate planning, estate administration and estate litigation for three decades. In 2005, 2006 and 2007, Worth Magazine named him one of the Top 100 Estate Planners in the United States. He is one of only three California lawyers to be named to that list in all three years. He is regularly chosen by his peers at other law firms for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America and the Northern California Superlawyers lists.
Scott has planned the estates of a broad variety of family business owners, corporate executives and professionals, and has set up many charitable foundations for his clients. He has advised fiduciaries on the proper administration of numerous multi-million dollar estates and has successfully defended the estate tax returns filed by such estates. Scott has represented both fiduciaries and beneficiaries in estate litigation, including the much publicized litigation regarding the estates of the founders of DHL Courier Services and Squaw Valley Ski Resort.
In addition to his practice, Scott has lectured for the American and California Bar Associations, has written for the University of Southern California Tax Institute and the California Continuing Education of the Bar, and has taught estate planning at the University of San Francisco School of Law. He has served as chairman of the 3,500-member Tax Section of the California Bar Association and was selected as the 1990 Outstanding Young California Tax Lawyer. Scott holds degrees from Stanford University, the University of California and Golden Gate University.
For many years, Scott has been a member of the executive committee of That Man May See, a non-profit organization that every year raises millions of dollars for vision research at the University of California.
