Jeff Dodd Joins DP&F Land Use Group
Jeff Dodd was sworn into the California bar today by Judge Rodney Stone of the Napa Superior Court. Jeff is the newest attorney to join Dickenson, Peatman & Fogarty and will be practicing in the firm’s Land Use and Litigation departments.
Jeff is a 2013 graduate of McGeorge Law School and earned his undergraduate degree at UC Santa Barbara. Most recently, Jeff externed for Chief Justice Cantil Sakauye of the California Supreme Court. Jeff is a Napa native and son of Napa County Supervisor Bill Dodd.

International Wine Law Educational Session Friday in Santa Cruz
This Friday. November 22, 2013, the International Wine Law Association and Continuing Education of the Bar California (CEB) will be sponsoring an educational session for wine industry professionals and attorneys on legal topics related to the international and domestic wine trade. The conference will take place at Hotel Paradox in Santa Cruz, California. There will be a morning session and afternoon session with a hosted lunch in between.

Legal Highlights from CalPoly’s New Wine & Viticulture Program
Dickenson, Peatman & Fogarty attorneys Carol Kingery Ritter and Katja Loeffelholz were recently guest lecturers at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s new Wine and Viticulture program. The class was led by Professor William H. Amspacher who is promoting the interdisciplinary major of Wine and Viticulture. All students in the interdisciplinary major are educated about all aspects of the wine industry, with a curriculum that combines an understanding of vineyards, winemaking and wine business.
Ms. Kingery Ritter presented “Planning Your Entry Into and Exit from the Wine Industry” and discussed business planning, business structures and the acquisition of assets. Ms. Loeffelholz, a registered attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office presented “Protecting Your Intellectual Property Assets in the Wine Industry” which reviewed the various aspects of wine labels and packaging that can be trademarked, copyrighted and patented. Ms. Loeffelholz also presented detailed information on protecting trademarks abroad, focusing on protecting wine brands in China. Wine Law Treatise Now Available on Amazon
The recently-published wine law treatise by Richard Mendelson, Wine in America: Law and Policy, is now available on Amazon.com. The treatise is intended to provide reference information on legal issues affecting the wine industry. The subject areas include trade practices, labeling and advertising, business models for making wine and growing grapes, the commerce clause and the 21st amendment, wine brands and appellations of origin, land use issues for wineries and bars, counterfeit wine, public health and social responsibility and international institutions and accords. The book is the first comprehensive treatise on wine law in the U.S. The book was edited and written by Richard Mendelson, Director of the Program on Wine Law and Policy at UC Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law and Of Counsel at Dickenson, Peatman & Fogarty. Other contributing authors include many experts in the area of wine law including Jim Seff and Carrie Bonnington of Pillsbury Winthrop, Wendell Lee of the Wine Institute, Jim Terry, Scott Gerien and Erik Lawrence of Dickenson, Peatman & Fogarty, Lynne Carmichael of Hinman & Carmichael and Jacques Audier of the University of Bordeaux.
